Course Description

Although the Middle East is known as the birthplace of Islam, it had also been home to other great monotheistic religions and countless of other religious groups like the Yazidis, Zoroastrians, and polytheistic groups. Some of these traditions are no longer practiced, but others still exist and at times thrived amid the changing religious landscape ushered in by the rise and spread of Islam. This seminar will examine the changing circumstances of non-Muslims in the Middle East and the broader Islamic world in order to understand how they evolved and adapted within a constantly transforming region.
