Course Description

This course explores the nature and diversity of mystical literary traditions in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Although the focus will be on common themes (such as love, suffering, and apophatic or negative theology) present in mystical literature, students will explore the differences within each theme taken up by various authors in each tradition. To focus the comparison, the course will primarily look at medieval (12-14th c.) literature and poetry, including Ibn al-‘Arabi and Ibn al-Farid (in the Islamic tradition), Meister Eckhart and John of the Cross (in the Christian tradition), and the Zohar (in the Jewish tradition).
