Course Description

Into the royal courts of Egypt, Babylon, and Assyria poured vast collections of histories, poetry, liturgy, natural sciences, and diplomatic records. The Library of Alexandria aspired to emulate these ancient libraries and go beyond – the assimilation of the intellectual ‘wealth of nations’ and the dispersal of Hellenistic culture throughout the known world. This course surveys the foundation, life, and death of the Library, her royal patrons, her directors, and the survival of scholastic culture from late antiquity to the emergence of the modern university.
