Course Description

“Eros makes my thoughts quiver – like a wind in a mountain the trees alighting.” [Sappho fr. 47]. This course surveys two centuries’ worth of archaic Greek poetry and traces its development against the backdrop of rapid political & economic change across the known Greek world. Covering a wide range poets and genres, we’ll scan aloud and translate 80-100 lines per session, attempting to get a handle on the metrical forms fundamental to Greek lyric Prerequisite: At least two years of ancient Greek, preferably Attic, but Homeric or koine Greek are also fine.
