Course Description

“You – who have come to light as a boon shared by mortals, poor Prometheus, what did you do to merit this punishment?” Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to human beings, has been chained to a rock under orders from Zeus. But in the play’s major innovation, Prometheus now claims to have information critical to the stability of Zeus’ power. We’ll read aloud & translate 100 lines per session of this play, comparing it to the Promethean tradition as developed by Hesiod and considering modern claims that cast doubt on the play’s authorship by Aeschylus. Prerequisite: At least two years of ancient Greek, preferably Attic, but Homeric or koine Greek are also fine.
