Course Description

This course aims to give a general introduction to the various ways Buddhism was understood and practiced in the religion’s first thousand years in China. We will begin by tracing the history of the first interpretations and receptions of Buddhist materials such as philosophical treatises and art forms in the early centuries CE, followed by the religion’s continued interaction with indigenous Daoist and Confucian traditions, and lastly later developments such as the Chan, Pure Land, and esoteric movements which proved significant to the cultural landscape of China and beyond, including the rest of East Asia and parts of South East Asia.
