Course Description

The Silk Road, an extensive Eurasian network named for the westward trade of Chinese silk, was not only crucial to the economic and political interactions between the various civilizations along its route, but also to the development of religious ideas and practices through centuries of  intensive cultural exchange. In this course, we will focus on the spread of Buddhism through the Silk Road, its transformations in Central Asia and China, and lastly the subsequent cultural and political ramifications by examining archaeological sites, visual and material remains, and textual sources.
