Course Description

In this course, we examine how religion is reported and commented on in the media, with a focus on digital media. Students will read, analyze, discuss, and critique articles from a variety of online outlets. The goals of the course will be to engage rigorously with religion as it appears in the popular imagination, to enhance our media literacy skills, and to learn to communicate effectively via different forms of new media. The course is recommended for aspiring journalists, bloggers, social media users, and other public commentators on religion (whether from a religious or nonreligious perspective)—and for anyone interested in the relationships between religion, culture, and public life.
