Course Description

“Chicago ain’t ready for reform yet,” said Paddy Bauler, a “machine hack” in the first Daley administration who sparred with “Yippie” activist, Abbie Hoffman. Perhaps, but the city radically transformed itself, emerging from the ashes of industrialization to a new and shining global city! Yet, problems remain, including underperforming schools, political corruption, and crime. We will look at the history of political reform efforts from the time of Richard J. Daley to the current mayors of Chicago, including the King years and the 1968 Democratic Convention. The underbelly of Chicago provides us a rich literary tradition to draw from.
