Course Description

Instructor: Joshua Daniel.  This course focuses on the major works of one of the twentieth-century’s most important writers: Albert Camus. We will read his two most important novels—The Stranger and The Plague—and two of his most important philosophical works—The Myth of Sisyphus and The Rebel. The point is not to read his novels as mere illustrations of his philosophy, nor to read his philosophy as moral and political lessons condensed out of his novels. Rather, we will read them as mutually enriching, asking ourselves, “What did Camus want to communicate to his readers that required him to write both literature and philosophy?” Course code: BASC50033
