Course Description

Instructor: Katia Mitova.  American Pastoral (1997), I Married a Communist (1998), and The Human Stain (2000), also known as Roth’s American Trilogy, tell independent but thematically related stories. Representative of Roth’s mature artistry, the novels invite the reader to re-evaluate the American dream of prosperity and equality by following the fates of three generations of characters entangled in the complexity of historical events such as the Vietnam War and its aftermath, the New Left and the social upheavals of the 1960’s and early 1970’s as well as McCarthyism, the Watergate scandal, racial prejudice, political correctness, and affirmative action in the education system.
