Course Description

Instructor:  Clare Pearson.  In this class we will read several short works of Friedrich Nietzsche that give us an overview of his historical approach to philosophy. We begin with Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks, an early and important though unpublished encounter with some of the pre-Socratic philosophers and lays out his encounter with the beginnings of philosophy in the west. We will follow this up with a brief reading of On the Advantage and Disadvantage of History for Life, then move on to look at some of his more aphoristic calls for the end of philosophy in Twilight of the Idols and The Antichrist. Our goal will be to see the shape of Nietzsche’s philosophical/historical vision. Course code: BASC80133 Philosophy
