Course Description

Instructor Claudia Traudt.  This Summer we will give ourselves over to two works of concussive power, beauty and imagination-seizing, in very different modes.  Toni Morrison’s 1977 novel Song of Solomon, though of moderate length, is one epic saga. The story of Macon (Milkman) Dead III’s and his family’s origins, questings, longings, woundings, risks creates a world both historical (and critical), and fabulist. Eudora Welty’s lapidary Thirteen Stories collection -“Keela, the Outcast Indian Maiden,” “Petrified Man,” “The Hitch-hikers,” ALL – stuns with the actuality, incisiveness, humaneness, savagery, healing, humor of its varied portrayals. We will revel in the astounding worlds, identities, connections and chasms the novel and the thirteen stories create, and the voluptuous and visceral, the stringent and edged means the authors employ to do so.
