Course Description

Instructor: Adam Rose

Writing in the years leading up to the American Civil War, Henry David Thoreau took it upon himself to examine the morality of his country’s behavior, especially with regard to slavery and imperial expansion. This mini-course will explore some of Thoreau’s classic essays on these matters as we seek to understand Thoreau in own terms and also to consider the possible relevance of his work for our own time.

Notes

Thoreau, “Civil Disobedience” and Other Essays, Dover Thrift Edition, ISBN: 978-0486275635
