Part III: Plato’s Theaetetus

The subject of the Theaetetus is knowledge. Following an introduction of Theaetetus, including an account of his life and a display of his mathematical talents, the inquiry begins with a question in the familiar Socratic form: “What is knowledge?” The bulk of the dialogue concerns proposed answers to that profound question, but their discussion reveals the difficulty of the question despite the keen mind and disciplined character of Theaetetus, a Platonic character who presents an interesting contrast to Meno. In the manner of Basic Program Tutorials, we will read and examine the Theaetetus.
