Course Description

Part III (Spring Quarter): Reconceiving the Nature and Ends of Art

Third of a three-quarter immersion in some of the best and most difficult social-theoretical, philosophical, literary, and artistic works of the 20th century. As always, new students welcome.

We will undertake an examination of the sense and significance of modern art: in the seminar reading seminal theories of art, and in the tutorial, looking at some of the major movements in twentieth century art, reading their various proponents and viewing representative works.

We frame the course through a reading of Balzac’s delightful and provocative story. Please see syllabus for reading for the first meeting.
