Course Description

Instructor: Cynthia Rutz

Plato’s Republic is without a doubt the philosopher’s greatest dialogue. It is at once a work about the well-ordered state and about the well-ordered soul. Socrates’ young pupils challenge him to defend being a good and just person, but there is a catch. He cannot appeal to the gods, to human law, or even to the goodwill of one’s neighbors. In other words, why be good if there are no rewards for it either here or in the hereafter? How Socrates responds to that challenge is at the heart of this rich dialogue.
