Course Description

Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope has been the subject of renewed interest in recent years. As The New Yorker has pointed out, “Trollope [is] Trending.” Trollope’s brand of High Victorian Liberalism made him both representative of his era and an often astute commentator on its excesses. This course will focus on his 1875 novel, The Way We Live Now. Inspired by financial scandals which led to prolonged economic recession, this novel perhaps speaks more to our own post-2008 world than does Trollope’s other work. The Way We Live Now will be paired with secondary readings in order to understand Victorian England and the Victorians at a crucial crossroads.
