Course Description

The magazine story appeals to writers at all levels for good reason: with its myriad forms--from the essay, feature, and profile to long narratives, investigations, and exploration--it is a shape-shifter, perfect for those breaking into the business and longtime professionals alike. For all its various forms, magazine stories that work share certain defining characteristics. We’ll probe the tools, techniques, and approaches that distinguish effective magazine stories from those that fall flat. Through exercises, discussion, and workshops, we’ll examine what works, what doesn’t, and why and apply those lessons in our own writing. By finding worthwhile ideas, discovering and using research, and identifying craft-related choices that invest readers, we will shape stories that are true in fact and emotion.
