Course Description

We will read selections from the first two volumes of Gibbon’s six volume masterpiece, the vast scope of which defeats any attempt to squeeze into a single quarter’s study. Selections from the first and second volumes give us the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Empire down to the time of Theodoric, almost its first five hundred years. Conveyed by the rich carpet of Gibbon’s prose, the work is informative to an extraordinary degree as well as fascinating and entertaining.  Students captured by the informative beauties of Gibbon’s history will have a good foundation from which to tackle the whole history.
