Course Description

This non-required elective focuses on the process and skills necessary for gaining business understanding, conducting a business discovery and developing an analytical project plan. The course begins with an introduction to the history, current trends and future direction of the data analytics industry, then modules progress to hone in on analytical management skills and analytical project plan development. All topics are taught using examples from a variety of cross-industry real-world use cases.

Course Outline

*Overview of Data Science and Analytics

  • General, Industry, Technology, high level applications, talent, trends, history
    • Analytical Management
  • How is it different from traditional?
  • Tools to identify most pressing business problems and methods used to prioritize challenges
  • Frameworks to break problems into parts to see relationships or inter-dependencies
    • Business Discovery Process (stakeholders, business knowledge, legacy reports and analysis, market research, competitive analysis)
    • Analytical Leadership (Setting enterprise vision) vs. Analytical Management (tactical, incremental, project based approach)
    • Introduction to project planning (Waterfall, Agile, Blended)

Deliverable: Case Study approach, have student review overall business scenario, review notes from discovery interviews, determine most critical business problem, clearly communicate impact and risks to business if not solved, re-frame business problem as data mining problem, identify steps and build preliminary project plan.
