Course Description

This seminar will introduce and explore significant developments in the history of design from the 19th century to the present through a variety of object types including furniture, interiors, graphic design, typography, and industrial products. Focusing primarily on the modernist movements of Europe and the United States, design will be contextualized within its social, cultural, and economic histories, with particular emphasis given to the impact of materials, technology, and the shifting conditions of production and consumption.
