Course Description

Chicago has provided the setting and the opportunity for poets and fiction writers to examine the social and historical setting of the city in their works. This course will read and discuss writings from several examples of the Chicago Tradition including Theodore Dreiser, Upton Sinclair, Carl Sandburg, James T. Farrell, Lorraine Hansberry, Gwendolyn Brooks, Richard Wright, Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow and others.  We will seek to read a selection of these works by examining the social, economic or political context in which they were written. This course will illuminate Chicago’s history, culture and social and economic challenges.
