Course Description

Was the Italian Renaissance of the 15th century a revival of long-lost Greco-Roman classical culture? For over a century, scholars—most famously Charles Homer Haskins—have argued that a renaissance in the twelfth century preceded and prepared for the latter more famous renaissance. This period marks a turning-point in European history. This course will introduce the many shoots that sprang up in this vibrant and explosive century, specifically, the new cultural forms, the revival in liberal education and research, new religious movements, the innovation of Gothic architecture, peace movements, the first crusades, and new tension between governmental and ecclesiastical reformers.
