Course Description

Ranging from question of war, punishment, reproductive issues, and business practices, modern society has witnessed a breakdown in productive debate on pressing issues of what is ethical or unethical. More importantly, modern society lacks a consensus on which ethical theory to adopt to resolve our ethical disputes and disagreements. This class will examine seven major ethical schools of thought—three philosophical and four religious. The class will first examine utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics and then ethical principles drawn from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Confucianism. The ideas of these ethics will be discussed, and then scrutinized in their practical application.
