Course Description

Hinduism is a philosophy, religion and way of life for nearly one-sixth of the world's population. It is considered the world's oldest religion, dating back nearly 4000 years, and has a history of continuous evolution to meet changing times and settings. In this course, we will provide an overview of Hinduism, from the earliest Vedic traditions to Classical and Contemporary Hinduism. Through lectures, readings, short films, guest speakers and panel discussions, we will explore essential philosophical and literary texts, cultural traditions and festivals, social issues, common misconceptions, and the influence of Hinduism on American society as well as the "Americanization" of Hinduism.

Read an interview with the instructors of Hinduism in America.
