Course Description

November marked the centenary of the First World War’s end. This has sparked much reflection on a war which transformed Europe and had important consequences for much of the world. This course will focus on the way the war has been represented in European culture from the immediate aftermath to the centenary. Readings will include not only the prolific literature produced by war veterans, but also attempts by later generations of writers to portray the war, both in fiction and in the writing of history. We will also examine recent commemorations.
