Course Description

In this four-week class, we will examine, discuss, and practice methods for moving forward and backward in time. We will look at writers like Stuart Dybek, Grace Paley, and Ling Ma, who effectively compress years into a mere paragraph, use imagery to signal time slippage, or open a liminal space between past and present. Our conversations, lectures, and readings, as well as opportunities to share work, will pinpoint specific, effective tools—from the literal to the atmospheric—that will allow even the novice writer to competently navigate flashbacks, flash forwards, and even the more mundane shift of scene within a linear narrative.
