Course Description

Hands that can grasp, eyes
that can can dilate, hair that can rise

if it must... (Marianne Moore, "Poetry")

Poems are small – or large – bombshells. They are created worlds, wrought out of everything human, speaking to all that is human - via tremendous intentionality, subtlety, sensuality, honing, concrete technique. Poems, in their exactitude, live and operate in their hearing: the conjoined, sensory experience, emotion and intellection they beget. It IS sound and sense. In close reading and attending, we will experience and explore many of the themes, particulars and wonders of works by Emily Dickinson, Shakespeare, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, W.H. Auden, Audre Lorde, W.B. Yeats and others – discerning their makings and savoring their impacts.
