Course Description

This course will consist of an exploration of texts written by leading luminaries of the French Enlightenment. The major eighteenth-century French philosophers were as comfortable writing works of imaginative literature as of speculative philosophy, and they regularly expressed their philosophies through the medium of literature. In this course we will study fictional works authored by three of the most prominent philosophers from that place and time: Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Diderot. Each of these works, justly celebrated in its own time, imaginatively expresses the philosophy of its author. All of them continue to be worthy of close study.
