Course Description

This class will explore primary works of existentialism in literature and thought. After introducing existentialism through Dostoevsky’s “Notes from Underground,” we will move on to explore its themes primarily in the works of its major proponents Camus and Sartre. Readings will include, for essay material: Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus; Sartre, Truth and Existence. For literature, we will look at: Sartre:Nausea& No Exit; Camus: The Stranger, Caligula. If time permits we may also explore the argument between Sartre & Heidegger in Sartre’s “Existentialism is a Humanism” and Heidegger’s reply in the “Letter on Humanism.”
