PMGT11101 - Project Management: Idea to Completion
Course Description
This course provides a brisk high-level overview of the project management discipline and the PMI Framework. Materials in this class are based on the text, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, (PMBOK® Guide). It introduces the basic knowledge, insights, skills, and techniques that are required to steer projects toward their desired outcomes while also ensuring that they create value for the organizations that sponsor and execute them. The course begins with the history of project management and its relevance and importance to present-day organizations and firms. We then address the issues that enter into project selection and initiation and proceed to discuss the skills and techniques required to effectively and efficiently plan, execute, and monitor projects. Project closure considerations will also be covered. Our discussions will occur within the broader PMI framework of knowledge areas and process groups (which will also be introduced and explained in detail). All nine knowledge areas will be covered: integration, scope, time, cost, quality, communications, human resources, risk, and procurement. Practical tips for scaling the project management effort to fit the size, complexity, and overall profile of a project will also be shared with the class. The most widely used techniques (such as determining a critical path) will be illustrated using specific project examples and hands-on group assignments. This seminar is highly recommended for individuals who wish to refresh their basic skills and become familiar with PMI terms and concepts before participating in the Project Management Strategy Program. Some certificate applicants may be asked to take this class before beginning required courses.
