Course Description

Animism—the belief that animals, places, and things all have a “soul” or spiritual essence—may be one of the oldest known forms of religion. Interestingly, this supposedly primitive tradition experienced something of a comeback among some of the twentieth century’s most prominent English writers. In this course, we will explore why animism had such an appeal for figures like Thomas Hardy, John Cowper Powys, D. H. Lawrence, and Ted Hughes. We will read and discuss short excerpts from a number of their works, situating them within the context of both classic and contemporary theoretical approaches to animism.
