Course Description

This second course in the “From Western to World Civilization” sequence focuses on the history of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, including the rise of Islam, the Renaissance, Reformation, the Age of Exploration, to the eve of the French Revolution. It will emphasize two major themes: comparative political and social developments, and how to think historically through a common and contested narrative framework. Rather than a survey, this class will use primary documents, supplemented by the works of modern historians, to illuminate the development of a World civilization. All students, including those who were not able to take the first quarter, are welcome.
