Course Description

Over the past century and a half American writers have created a body of literature great in its illumination into the deeps of the human condition and our own lives. This course offers a wide range of themes and authors. A sampling includes human and social evil by Richard Wright in “A Man of All Work,” human folly by Henry James in the story “Lady Barbarina,” when faith forms fate by Bernard Malamud in his story “The Magic Barrel,” and the experience of defeat by Vladimir Nabokov in his story “An Affair of Honor.” Class will be run in seminar form where all will be encouraged to contribute insights and questions and learn from each other.
