Course Description

Please join Ariela Lazar, PhD for a trip to Philadelphia’s famed Barnes Foundation collection. The Foundation is home to the best post-impressionist collection in the world. The collection includes 181 paintings by Renoir, 69 by Cezanne, 59 by Matisse, 46 by Picasso, 16 by Modigliani, and many more. This visit will allow us to see—and see in context—some of the most famous and very best works of impressionist, post-impressionist and modernist art. In analyzing several of these works, we will focus on answering two questions. First, based on the main features of the new art of late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, what is the role and function of this art? Second, what is a masterpiece in this context?

We are glad to announce that we will have a dedicated classroom and enhanced access to the collection and its professional staff. The trip involves spending two full days at the Barnes Foundation on Monday and Tuesday, October 28 and 29, around the hours of 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Some of the time will be spent in the classroom with images in order to minimize the time spent at the galleries.

There will be a complimentary welcome dinner for all participants on Oct. 27 at 7pm. Details TBD.
