Course Description

The one Elizabethan playwright whom everyone knows is Shakespeare. Yet Shakespeare influenced, and was influenced by, other playwrights of his era. He even co-wrote and acted in some of their plays. In this course we will pair Shakespeare’s works with those of his contemporaries and also include some of the plays that he collaborated on. For instance, we will read Merchant of Venice along with Christopher Marlowe’s Jew of Malta and Hamlet in the light of Thomas Kyd’s Spanish Tragedy. We will also read works that are masterpieces in their own right, such as Thomas Middleton’s Changling and Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus.

For the first class, please read Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy.
