Course Description

We'll look at some excellent short stories and discuss why they work, with an eye toward further developing our own works-in-progress. How is the story structured? What essential elements of character, voice, action, and detail bring the story to life? What question drives the story and engages the reader? Within a few days after the first session, students will turn in up to ten pages of a short story draft. The instructor will return critiques four days before the second session. Students will integrate those comments and edits, and bring the revision to the second session. Excerpts of the revised stories will be shared and discussed in the second session.

First session: April 16

First story submission due to instructor: April 18 at 11:59 p.m.

Instructor returns comments: April 26

Second session: April 30

Pre-class Assignment: Before the first session, find a story that you'd like to emulate and bring a copy to the first class session.

Note: This class will now be held online. It takes place every other week, with online meetings on April 16 and April 30.
No class on April 23.
