Course Description

Borges is an acknowledged master of the short story. In just a few pages he creates a fictional world that often revolves around a thought experiment or philosophical question: What would happen if you couldn’t forget anything? What if you told the Theseus myth from the point of view of the Minotaur? What if someone attempted to rewrite Don Quixote, word for word? Favorite themes include labyrinths, mirrors, infinity, books, and libraries (he was himself director of the Argentine National Library from 1955-1973). For the first class, please read “The Garden of Forking Paths,” and “Funes, His Memory.”
