Course Description

In this course, we will take up a close reading of Tolstoy’s landmark novel War and Peace, looking at it both from a novelistic perspective and as a work of philosophy. The story of intertwined lives in Russia during the Napoleonic wars, War and Peace is a profound reflection on the nature of war, a theory of the relation of individual lives and striving to large historical events, and a rich exploration of the human search for meaning in the face of suffering. We will use the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation.
