BASC80147 - Lotus in the Mud: How Buddhism Keeps Reinventing Itself

Course Description

In this course, we'll read and discuss the Vimalakirti Sutra, an influential Buddhist scripture that focuses on paradox, non-duality, and the virtues of acting in seemingly unholy ways. The text will give us not only a crash course in the basic premises of Buddhism but also tools for understanding this tradition's peculiar tendency to undermine and transcend those very premises.
