Course Description

This discussion/lecture course will focus on the later history of Chicago, from around 1920 until the present, emphasizing the major events, politics, and peoples that make up one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Once called the "second city," it is better to think of it as the "capital of the middle border," for it is the center of a vast region. This course will focus on the maturation of Chicago, as reaches its peak in population and becomes a "global city." (Can be taken alone or as a follow-on course to "The City of the Century": A Short History of Chicago I).
