Course Description

The second of three Quarters in the study of Greek Tragedies and Comedies. This Quarter will be devoted to the study of the seven surviving plays of Sophocles and a second selection of four from the eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes. As in Autumn Quarter, our study will concern the structure and composition of the plots of each, the characters in each, and so on through the elements of each kind of drama, the origin and nature of the effects of each, and many related and disparate issues that we find in the course of discussion. Discussion will include attention to the similarities and differences of Aeschylus plays and those of Sophocles.
