Course Description

To Plato's dogma of the good Nietzsche opposes the will to power, a concept he develops in a trilogy of works of which Beyond Good and Evil (1886) is the central one. Has the prediction implicit in the book's subtitle, Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future, been borne out? Has the will to power supplanted the idea of the good in our own reflections about the meaning of life and a just society? The work, nine titled parts plus an epilogue in verse, is rich in variety. The ten weeks will be divided among these ten compositional units, one unit per week. The course will consist of a careful reading of the text with a view to Nietzsche's development of his central idea, the will to power.
