Course Description

In this class we will examine a selection of literature by the best German writers from the first half of the 20th century, focusing on short works to allow us to look in depth while still engaging a variety of writers. We will also discuss the historical and social backdrop of the times where this is useful. We will begin with Rilke’s pre-war work The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, a powerful piece by a beloved German poet set in turn-of-the-century Paris. From there we will briefly delve into Thomas Mann via short story, and Berthold Brecht’s post-WWII play Mother Courage. Our final piece of reading will be Heinrich Böll’s noteworthy early novella, The Train was on Time, set on the eastern front of WWII. We will close the class with a discussion of the film version of The Tin Drum, an award winning film version of what is generally considered the best novel of Nobel prize winning author Günter Grass.
