Course Description

August 1913, Vienna. Something big is in the air, but it is not the great celebration of the seventieth anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph’s rule anticipated by many. It is World War I and the interwar period with its fascist populism and escalating ethnic prejudice. This authorial knowledge as well as personal experience inform the story of Ulrich’s “desperate tenacity of a fisherman casting his nets into an empty river” – the Viennese society.

Robert Musil (1880-1942) began writing his seminal novel in 1921 and continued working on it, without finishing, until his death. We will focus the first two parts of The Man Without Qualities, published in Volume One of the Wilkins/Pike translation.
