Course Description

We will read Ivan Hannaford's seminal work, Race: The History of an Idea in the West, as he confronts the Western canon with a sympathetic yet critical eye in this, the first treatment of the idea of race from the standpoint of intellectual history. In tandem with Hannaford’s book about books, we will read Orlando Patterson’s Slavery and Social Death: A Comparative Study, which differs in approach from Hannaford in being, not the history of an idea, but the sociology of an institution across the globe and throughout history. Please note: the Patterson book was added after the course was named.
