Course Description

In the history of theatre, there is a long tradition of art addressing the issues of the day, especially those that concern the body politic. In this course we will investigate eight plays with political and social underpinnings that have challenged the conventional wisdom of their times. These works include Clifford Odets’ Waiting for Lefty, Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, David Hare’s Plenty, August Wilson’s Fences, Anna Deavere Smith’s Fires in the Mirror, Lynn Nottage’s Ruined, J.T. Rogers’ Oslo and Rajiv Joseph’s Describe the Night.
