Course Description

We read Shakespeare's Sonnet 73, Milton's Lycidas, and Bellow's "Seize the Day," which features the earlier works as part of the liberal education of the protagonist.

NB: Seize the Day has been published in several formats and anthologized over the years. If you have the one above, then it will be easier for you to locate passages we look at in class, but if you already have a copy of the story, then it should suffice.

Week Reading
1 Shakespeare, Sonnet 73 and Sonnet 74, Read these sonnets aloud to yourself. Practice different speeds, different pauses and emphases. Try to make it sound like it is you saying these words, and meaning them.
2 Milton, This text has line numbers, but low-tech font; Better looking layout, but no line numbers
3 Bellow, Seize the Day (entire story in book)
