Course Description

Audiences engage with stories for the pleasure of experiencing how people just like them strive to attain heartfelt desires in the face of antagonistic forces.

Characters, just like real people, are challenged and shaped by society, nature, the demands of earning a living, personal strengths and shortfalls, and significant relationships. Each of these components can be deployed as subplots that impact character and narrative arcs. In addition, the rules of the specific realms of knowledge and endeavor operating in stories can serve as compelling nonfiction subplot elements that engage audience interest while impacting the central storyline.

We’ll focus on deploying these and other elements in subplots that expand the scope, depth, and complexity of our stories, and move narratives forward to conclusions resonant with theme – what it is you wish to say about the human condition.
